Sandlot Games, the producers of popular casual installments, Super Granny and Westward, had just released the sequel to their western-themed title with the Westward II: Heroes of the Frontier game. And just like its predecessor, this game presents another gun-slinging adventure as you aim to build a self-sustaining community against all the dangers of the Wild Wild West.

Similar to being a quest-like mix of Warcraft III and Age of Empires, the Westward II: Heroes of the Frontier game takes you in control of a hero of your choice while building a town of settlers from the ground-up. Heroes get chosen between Marion Morrison, Maureen Fitzsimmons and Terence Stevens with each of these main characters granting you access to some basic but useful landmarks from the initial start of your quest. Build resource-gathering structures and buildings, create homes and jobs, and protect your community from random bandit attacks and other disasters, while leading your people to ultimate happiness in the process. And of course, a game like this will just be plain aimless if you won’t add in the additional quests during game play, right? Because that’s where the main game mode shines its brightest. :-)

The game also features a Sandbox mode where you can play just like how you play any other Sim game. This basically means that you can get an infinite amount of game play for the Westward II: Heroes of the Frontier game, and maybe get to put your settlement skills to the test also in the process.

The Review

I bet that the first and lasting impression you’ll get from the Westward II: Heroes of the Frontier game is how beautiful the 3D engine flows throughout the whole game. It’s really a great improvement from the original Westward game and is definitely more appealing to the eyes. The in-game music is very nice also and I loved the funny voice-overs of the characters. The controls are quite smooth too with the right-click function working wonderfully for character movement and automatic action. It’s an overall great game with just some minor tweaks to consider, of course. :-)

I guess that the only negative thing I found in this game is its very steep difficulty curve even during the early points of playing. I honestly had trouble fulfilling all of the quests involved while juggling manpower and resources from the limited starting point. Not to mention the pesky bandits always revisiting the town, it’s quite annoying to just restart your game when you suddenly find yourself out of any resources for use.

The Westward II: Heroes of the Frontier game needs time in getting use to but once you got the hang of the dynamic planning and resource management, it’s really a challenging and fun game. The overall theme is awesome and the addition of the Sandbox mode gets you more than your money’s worth. Overall, the game is very unique and it’s addictive, and it’s definitely worth your try, even just for experiencing the whole Westward game play.
