Carol Reed’s adventure in Sweden is once again continued with the Time Stand Still game coming from MDNA Games and is now available as a direct download coming from Big Fish Games. After her debut detective escapade from Remedy and Hope Springs Eternal, she gets to embark on a new mystery for this game, but now, she finally got her own apartment, and with that is an age old mystery begging to be solved once and for all.

Just like Carol Reed’s previous games, Time Stand Still is a first-person point-and-click game where you have to explore various sceneries in Sweden to talk to people and find clues concerning your most recent assignment. And this time, you are tasked to investigate a haunted house involving a 60-year old unsolved murder that goes way back to World War II. Now, that would be very foreboding, eh? But don’t worry, there is absolutely no violence, bloodshed or foul language involved in the game so you’re sure that it’s made just for your pure sleuthing enjoyment.

To navigate, you just have to use the mouse to click on directional arrows for turning or moving forward. Your mouse cursor will also change into a magnifying glass when you are facing some item that can be of some interest to Carol or something that is important for you to investigate further. And just like other adventure games of this type, you have to talk to people too in order to further progress the story as well as gain clues about the mystery.

Puzzles also run aplenty in Time Stand Still. Many of these mini-games are logic-based problems involving mazes and other puzzles that reveal further items, clues or dialogue for you to ponder upon. Furthermore during your progress, the map screen will also reveal additional locations for you to visit.

The game features a fully free-roaming environment much like the Nancy Drew games too. This means that while you can always take your time admiring the artwork of the game, it also means that it’s easy to get lost or sidetracked from what you must do to progress your adventure. Many times, minimal clues are also given so if you’re like me, I guess you’ll also be spam-clicking the areas to find your next point of action (well, that’s how desperate I am).

The same visuals and graphics are also retained from the previous games for Time Stand Still. Compelling photo shots of sceneries are represented with a watercolor effect that adjusts whenever you go nearer or farther away from your object of interest. The game involves great ambient musical effects too that are all very engaging depending on the theme of the place you’re currently into. All in all, the overall presentation is very nice and just like in Remedy, I honestly believe that this is still the greatest highlight of the game.
