It’s been quite a while since we had a review here at Casualicious, but boy do I have a good game to introduce to you guys today. Its name is QuantZ, a unique version of the popular color-matching puzzle genre. And its not just some spin-off too, as new mechanics is also introduced for a yummier puzzle gameplay.
The objective of the game is for you to traverse all of the worlds of QuantZ and level up as high as possible. Leveling up is an award based on points, so in other words, try to get the most points as possible as you continue on your journey through the game.
QuantZ has 3 modes of play. The main of which is the Strategy game, wherein you get a chance to unlock the second mode: Puzzle. Playing through ten levels in Puzzle mode will then unlock the third mode: Action. And just as the names of these modes suggest, Action is fast paced, Puzzle is brain twisting, and Strategy is a mix of the two.
The mechanics is simple but still breathtaking. All you have to do is to control a cube-like mass at the center of the screen by moving your mouse. This cube has colored spheres called QuantZ scattered on its surface. Clear all spheres by matching four like-colored ones. This is done by shooting a colored sphere on a desired surface in Strategy and Puzzle, or set the cube waiting for falling colored spheres in Action.
That’s not all there is to it though, because when you successfully match spheres that are enveloping another different-colored sphere, the QuantZ will cause an explosion and create a fireball. This fireball will be able to burn spheres with the same color as itself, and may cause multiple explosions too if placed properly. Sometimes, it’s also vital to produce fireballs, especially in Puzzle mode wherein every sphere counts.
One thing I noticed too is how the cube acts like a planet with gravity. This means you can shuffle all those QuantZ around by moving the cube fast enough to have those spheres roll or jump all over the cube’s surface. This spells more advanced tactics than your typical matching puzzle game, and is a very good test of skills too, since moving spheres around is essential to gain skill awards and get that elusive increase in points for leveling up.
With all of these unique features in gameplay, QuantZ is a whole new challenge for all casual gaming fans. It never fails to surprise. Like when you encounter frozen QuantZ during mid-game, or varying cube formations that become more and more challenging as you progress through the levels. In fact, just check out the Matrix-style slow motion feature when you press and hold the left mouse button. Simply awesome I tell you.
Oh! And I did say the game was breathtaking earlier, right? Well, let’s just say that graphics is one thing considered very well during production of this game. Presentation wise, the game is two thumbs up. It takes some getting used to in predicting the landing path of the spheres and fireballs, but just like any other new game, having full grasp of controls is no sweat at all if you keep playing.
With its 3 modes, 24 worlds and 100 levels, QuantZ basically means hours and hours of gameplay. Definitely worth the look, try and feel, but beware of the addiction that comes with it.
