Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek
Adventure Games, Puzzle Games May 17th, 2008
Since the last time that I reviewed a Nancy Drew mystery game, I was really amazed at how much fun I had with the dynamic sleuthing simulation that, in my opinion, unparalleled by any other series I had played before. And on the Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek game, we get to see our teenage detective once again as she takes on a mystery involving a wolf, an old mountain resort, and lots and lots of snow in the Canadian Rockies.
Much like most of Her Interactive’s Nancy Drew games, Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek deals with a first person Adventure as you play as the famous teen detective trying to solve yet another creepy case. This time around, you’re off to save the Icicle Creek lodge by solving many of the mysteries befalling its visitors. And just like The Haunted Carousel, your job includes snooping around all the surrounding areas, questioning possible suspects, and gathering clues from your entire journey. But there’s so much new about this game too, and I also hope to tackle some of it in this simple review.
One most recognizable change in the Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek game is its new game interface. Now, your inventory, notes and checklist are easily accessible from the bottom of the screen, as well as the game menus for easy access to the save and load buttons. This is really a great evolution from the past Nancy Drew games and I definitely loved the whole new play area because it’s easier, faster and more convenient too on the side of the player.
The challenge went up a notch a bit on many of Nancy’s tasks and puzzles too. For one, you always have to keep track of your time in the game because… well… besides from just the normal sleuthing, Nancy is also commissioned to be the lodge’s maid (there’s a reason for this), and that means that you’ll also need to do all your chores scheduled for every day you spend in Icicle Creek. Now, I know it can be pretty much annoying, but this opens up a cooking mini-game too. In fact, there are several other mini-games like this, but I especially liked the snowball fights against a certain Princess Freddie.
As for the presentation, the Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek game follows the same awesome graphics as its predecessors. The story and theme is just fantastic, and the voice talents are simply great. The game can be pretty darn challenging though, but that doesn’t mean that you’ll have no fun cracking up the puzzles. Besides, I think that’s the main highlight of this game making it much better than our previous Nancy Drew review anyways. So, if you really dig TRUE sleuthing fun, then this game is definitely the way to go. In fact, Her Interactive got a new fan in me after this game, and I’m saying that sincerely from the bottom of my heart.
