Nancy Drew: The Haunted Carousel
Adventure Games, Puzzle Games April 24th, 2008Being a teen detective, Nancy Drew should obviously have more time in her hands in comparison with other snoopy sleuths. But with about 17 game titles already attributed to her name, you’ll very much wonder where in the world she gets all these mysteries from? And now that her 8th adventure, the Nancy Drew: The Haunted Carousel game has surfaced on Big Fish Games, it’s now time to give her our first Casualicious dot Com review.
Developed by Her Interactive, Nancy Drew: The Haunted Carousel tells the mystery on how a merry-go-round in Captain’s Cove Amusement Park lost its lead horse and eventually became haunted after it went running on its own in the middle of the night. Other than that, the roller coaster also lost power and eventually, forced the park to close its doors to the public. Commissioned by the park’s owner, Paula, you, playing as Nancy Drew would have to unravel the mystery surrounding Jersey shore’s famous park and get the park running smooth once again.
Like most sleuthing games, Nancy Drew: The Haunted Carousel is a first person Adventure game involving you to talk to people, gather tools and items, and try to progress further into the mystery by doing your actual snooping around stuff. There are a total of 4 persons you get to interact with again and again in this game but that’s not counting the other people you can talk to also by using your handy dandy cell phone. There’re also your friends, Bess and George, to whom you can confide your latest investigations, and a laptop that serves for email, tracks your to-do lists and incorporates a mini-game to pass up your time.
All in all, you won’t really get lost in this game if you’re using all of the resources given to you. But unlike conventional games of this type, Nancy Drew: The Haunted Carousel will also punish you for failure. And that means that your game will definitely end quickly if you do something wrong during your sleuthing work.
The Review
Honestly, this is actually the first time that I played any Nancy Drew game that I can’t give a valid comparison between The Haunted Carousel and her other earlier adventures. But I can definitely say that I was stunned on this game’s graphics and its eerie music and ambience gave me the feeling that someone is off to stab my back while I wasn’t looking. All the characters are nicely done with their 3D graphics and it’s really amazing how they respond to your presence when you hover your mouse cursor on them. And I can’t even say less with the dubbing quality since the character’s mouth movements coincide real well with the dialog, making you feel that you’re actually talking to real people than computer sprites.
What I found great also in this game is the fact that you can always remind yourself on what you’ll have to do next with all the tools in your arsenal. The presence of your laptop and your phone friends will keep you on track with your investigation, while still leaving out some puzzles you’ll have to do yourself. This doesn’t mean though that Nancy Drew: The Haunted Carousel is an easy game, because I still found myself occasionally stuck on some parts of the adventure, trying to make clue ends meet.
Another bonus for finishing the game gives you some kind of badge that shows HOW you played through the whole mystery. I got one saying that I finished the game with the least number of steps, but there’s other badges too that’s rewarded for quite a variety of ways. Well, you can always check them out at Nancy’s email inbox so I’ll not be listing them all here.
All in all, Nancy Drew: The Haunted Carousel is really one near-perfect game, and if it got that Trial Version, I would definitely ask you guys to download it now and get to play it even for 1 hour.
I’m really sorry for this, but it’s not mine to choose, so if you guys trust me, all I’m gonna say is that it’s money well spent.
