James Patterson Women’s Murder Club: A Darker Shade of Grey
Hidden Object Games, Puzzle Games March 20th, 2009
Women’s Murder Club: A Darker Shade of Grey is the second game in a hidden object sleuthing series featuring four friends of different professions but sharing the same passion for solving homicide cases. And this time around, it’s a whole new level of risk as the friends go against very powerful institution housing a foe that won’t hesitate to kill.
In the game, you play mostly as the main protagonist Lindsay Boxer. After discovering the dead body of a student coming from a prestigious military academy, initial assumptions of the case points to an unfortunate accident – a fall off the edge of a cliff. However, as most starting evidence goes, this single death marks the start of a deep and dangerous case. And since the suspects are mostly military personnel, Lindsay and her friends will have a tough time as most evidence get fabricated and the truth twisted in order to cover a very wicked plot.
Women’s Murder Club: A Darker Shade of Grey shows qualities of your average hidden object game but doesn’t really focus on making the player find random items that doesn’t have anything to do with the actual storyline. As a matter of fact, all of the objects you’ll need to explore further are already handed to you through blinking lights. Occasionally though, you’ll encounter traditional hidden object game play too by finding enumerated items listed on Lindsay’s journal.
The game seems to lack any challenge since there’s little object-finding involved but the producers focused more in making innovative mini-games which is breathe of fresh air when it comes to hidden object casual games. Of course, you can always have the option of instantly solving any mini-game through a push of a button, but the drawback is that you’ll lose acquiring maximum points at the end of the game.
Just like its predecessor, Women’s Murder Club: A Darker Shade of Grey rotates you automatically among the friends Lindsay Boxer, Cindy Thomas and Claire Washburn depending on what needs to be done at a particular level. Cindy is mostly the gatherer of information and Claire is the laboratory expert, messing with chemicals in most of her participation. Mini-games from the previous game takes a comeback too, like the microfiche sorting game whenever Cindy tries to find past news articles.
The game looks beautifully with all sceneries looking almost lifelike. Character dialogues are presented during the actual game which prompts you to treat each character input as a clue towards your intended goal. While I’m not really impressed with the artwork during the in-game cinematic, the storyline is where the game actually shines. Later levels will have some very disturbing and suspenseful scenes, putting you at the edge of your seat until the case is solved.
Frankly, Women’s Murder Club: A Darker Shade of Grey is an easy and straightforward game. Eventually, you’ll gather all of the evidences, suspects, victims and information in no time while reviewing them through your portfolio. Still, I took great satisfaction in playing through the levels and casual gaming fans will definitely see this game as a nice piece of sleuthing adventure even more than the first installment.
