Enigma
Hidden Object Games, Puzzle Games May 10th, 2008From iWin, Territory IT Casual and GO! Games comes the Enigma game, a Hidden Object mystery following the puzzling search for Europe’s most priced antique paintings. In this game, you play the role of a detective commissioned to find a total of 50 paintings that went missing and scattered all throughout Europe. And since you’re not just a detective on this game, but also an extraordinarily talented art historian, you fill in the spot quite well as you start your journey in Paris, finding and restoring art pieces until you catch the culprits behind the entire thievery.
Being a Hidden Object game, the whole game objective in Enigma is for you to find listed alien objects that served as vandalism on all 50 of the stolen paintings. And after all the searching, clicking and completing the list, the second phase of painting restoration takes you into placing back all the missing elements of a painting by dragging these objects on their proper places.
Basically, that’s all there is to the Enigma game as you do the same to all the found paintings, but it can get quite challenging too especially on the second phase, since you’re only given a thumbnail picture as a reference for dragging back even the smallest of the objects. But if you’re that person patient for some guesswork, the second phase can be finished fast too by dragging the object all throughout the painting until an outline pops up indicating its proper place. So I guess, all in all, it’s quite a unique Hidden Object game, but I honestly find the pattern too repetitive after some time of playing, and in my opinion, a mini-game of some sort will do the game well in terms of being more interesting.
However, I find the paintings all beautifully rendered into Enigma, except the larger ones that are just impossible to fit on a very small frame (even on full screen mode). The music and game play are just okay, but what I really liked was the learning aspect presented by the game when a brief background about the paintings is presented to the player before every round start. And coupled with a storyline that develops after every level, fans of art and sleuthing alike will definitely find this game informative and engaging.
All in all, the Enigma game is not really the best Hidden Object game when put side by side with some of the big dogs of this genre, but when it comes to the educational and mystery aspect, this game is one of the tops. The overall pattern of game play is too repetitive, and because of that, the game can be very easy also after some time of playing. Anyway, it’s not everyday that you get restore pieces of art, right? Well, I guess this game opens up the chance for you to do just that.
