Emerald City Confidential
Adventure Games, Puzzle Games February 23rd, 2009
If there’s one thing you’ll remember after hearing the words Emerald City, then certainly it’s going to be The Wizard of Oz. Bringing back the magic of this place from years ago since Dorothy and her adventure, Emerald City Confidential now follows the plotline of post-war Oz, a thriving country not only in terms of culture and commerce, but also of greed and corruption too.
The story of the game starts with a seemingly simple case given to a private investigator named Petra. At first, it seems as if our heroine takes on these dangerous tasks just to make ends meet, but in reality, her free time is mostly spent in search for her own missing brother. Anyway, her current case is not to be taken lightly either since as the case thickens, she finds herself a key component in the middle of an impending war, but on the positive side, puts her nearer the goal of finding her long lost brother as well.
Emerald City Confidential is an adventure type game where you take a third person view of Petra while you investigate people, places and clues helping you achieve your goals in-game. Much like any other detective-type adventure, most of your time playing will involve talking to various individuals living in the world of Oz. You’ll see many of the familiar characters in the original story, like Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man, who are also playing main roles in the game. Included in the list are other lovable characters too like Glenda the good witch and Toto, Dorothy’s lovable dog.
The setting is so much different from the Oz that we used to know though, since in this game, Oz is a very dark place. Scarecrow is already the former King, Lion is an opportunistic lawyer, and Tin Man is a heartbroken governor. I know that this is going to be a big twist from the happy and wonderful place depicted in the stories, but nevertheless, it now becomes a perfect setting for a large-scale mystery. Some of the scenes are shocking, yes, but the explanation for the story development is what the game does best to depict.
Most of the time spent on the game is for you to choose correct responses and actions in the dialogue panel located above the game screen. Your game menu is located at the bottom of the screen which houses your inventory composing of items you collect during the course of your adventure. On later parts of the game, you will be including magic in your menu too, perfect for slipping out of complicated predicaments and even at one time, dueling with another witch. This means that most of the time, you won’t know what item or magic to use from the vast inventory, but I guess that’s one of the main challenge presented by the game.
Emerald City Confidential is a real brain teaser and because of your freedom in-game, you’ll sometimes have a choice on whether to complete your current mission or start another one easier to do. In this case, Petra’s journal plays a very important part to the game, provided as a tool for you to keep track of not only your missions, but also notes your acquired knowledge pills and sketches.
And in case you’re wondering, pills and sketches are just optional parts of the game. Pills provide information about the history of each character and place throughout the land of Oz. Sketches on the other hand can be collected by finding buttons scattered all throughout the game. They are unnecessary, but add a little entertainment nonetheless.
The game is presented well and the storyline is very rich in depth. While most of the time the story is very serious, there are comic relief dialogues injected from time to time, keeping the plot very interesting to develop. And with its longevity, Emerald City Confidential is definitely a must-buy because honestly, you really won’t be experiencing much from just the free one hour trial casual game offering.
