Diamond Drop 2
Match 3 Games, Puzzle Games April 15th, 2008The Diamond Drop 2 game is a sequel to the lesser known Diamond Drop title made by casual game developer, Intenium. It’s actually a Match 3 game featuring Gary, a mole with an attitude but with the mining skills to make up for it. And since this game is featuring a new main character other than Jerry the mole from the previous Diamond Drop game, this just means that we’ll get to witness a better storyline and some new characters added into the mix.
As was said earlier, Gary is actually a gem miner, tasked with delivering precious jewelry to the animal residents of Fieldgrove. Busy as all moles are, Gary is beginning to see his life coming into a great turn when a new mining rival and a possible love interest named Angelina Puddington enters the scene. And with the looming expiration of his mining rights, you have to help Gary prove to the people of Fieldgrove that he’s still the best mole miner in town.
While the story of Diamond Drop 2 is good in its own way, the mechanics of its Match 3 game play is also still as addictive as the original Diamond Drop game. Your task is to catch gems forming from the mine’s ceiling and throw it back up again to match with the same patterned gems in order to collect them for your many uses. Every customer asks for a specific jewelry and you must fill the jewel frames with your gathered gems before you run out of time to deliver the goods. Upgrade your wares, keep your customers happy and have fun in following the game’s story. All in all, it’s quite a blend of Match 3 and Time Management game play, and this game does the mix all very well.
The Review
The Diamond Drop 2 game has a very nice animation blended with smooth Match 3 game play. The animal character drawings are nicely done and Gary’s 3D appearance is very funny when he does his dancing jig after every stage.
While the game’s story is also planned very well, it’s still obvious that the English translations of the story’s text are not that good. Furthermore, the voice-over narrator tries so hard in making up voices for the vast number of characters present in the game. And since Diamond Drop 2 still follows traditional Match 3 action, expect the game play to get quite repetitive over time.
The collection of item upgrades and power-ups makes the game very interesting though. And I must admit that the unique Diamond Drop action can be quite addictive too. The challenge falls in the easy category, and I guess the game is most appealing to kids just because of this fact.
