Clueless
Action & Arcade Games, Time Management Games February 14th, 2009
Movie-based games are often produced to promote their silver screen counterparts in order to produce buzz about the film and sell more to the gaming audience. But this time, it’s the other way around for the Clueless game, since the movie started way back in 1995 through Paramount and hopefully, following its past success, will expose the game to the movie fans. Still, what’s important is how the game fares in the fun factor, which will be our topic in this review.
Clueless follows the adventures of Cher, an upper class teenager fashionista in Beverly Hills. In this game, your task is to make the world a better place by helping your friends dress up according to the latest fashion styles. With the primary objective to wow their boyfriends, you’ll have to scour through every nook and cranny of the local mall to spot the latest trends and put them to good use for your friends’ benefit.
The mechanics of the game is simple. Before each level starts, you are shown a fashion style with the description of the clothes that comprise that style. All you have to do then on the actual game is to dress up your girl friends depending on the style by clicking on appropriate tops, bottoms, shoes and accessories that fit the category. There’s also an option to dress up according to their boyfriend’s whims, which is entirely optional but earns you extra points if accomplished. Just be sure to do all the tasks within the time limit given with each model you need to dress up.
After the dress-up portion, your work is off to be judged according to how it fares according to the style you want to meet. Each part of the dress is given a letter rating corresponding to the number of style descriptions it signifies. Depending on your results, Cher will sometimes appear to comment on your work. The boyfriends will also input comments of their own if you manage to satisfy their wants.
Clueless also includes a memory type of mini-game wherein you’re given a few seconds to look at a model and her clothes and re-enact the same picture by dressing up and posing your own model. Again, points are awarded depending on your skill which can put you on the high score table, but other than that, the mini-game is certainly a great way to take a break from the repetitive time management game.
Later levels of the game gains you access to more power-ups and more styles to consider. Power-ups include ones that give you additional points when trying to impress boyfriends and even ones that give you more points when you pose the models according to a given chart. The variety in styles is also great ranging from typical formal and casual wear, to signature fashion and even military style. And later levels will make you consider multiple styles at once, which mean more confusion and less time to dress up your friends.
This variety is also the best feature of Clueless, and with its many levels, fans of fashion-themed games will love the whole array of styles it presents. As a matter of fact, the game also awards you for getting good points in design, as well as trying out dresses you haven’t used before. Just check out the trophy system on how you can reach in-game accomplishments. And if you want to play like a fashion designer, access the Concave Photo Shoot building available in the map portion of the game.
I have to say though that Clueless fails in overall visual presentation. It’s understandable that all characters and sounds are derived from the movie, and considering that, I like the music very much. However, in terms of visuals, there’s no animation and you only get to see static pictures of people talking through dialogue boxes. It kinda feels like playing with paper dolls. In fact, even the faces of the actual actors and actresses in the movie looked like superimposed on cartoon bodies.
As I said before, Clueless may be targeted more for fans of fashion-themed games. With the lack of animation, the game is not really as exciting as you might expect, but certainly challenging and engaging enough to make you keep playing and improve as you go through the levels.
