One of the most famous (if not the most famous) word games in the world is back in an addictive sequel that hopes to continue on the success of its predecessor. Text Twist 2 features the same old Text Twist gameplay but at the same time, adds in an array of game modes suggesting a whole new letter-scrambling experience for all fans of the original game.

In retrospect, the mechanics of Text Twist, the original game, is for you to form words by rearranging up to seven letters of the alphabet and earn points from each word you form depending on its length. Furthermore, in order to for you to continue on the next level, you have to form a single word using all the letters given to you, giving birth to what is known as the Bingo Word. Basically, it’s an infinite game, but very addictive too since backing the game up is its tremendous success as one of the most recognized word games around.

I guess owing much to this success, it’s really no surprise that Text Twist 2 follows the same gameplay mechanics especially on its Timed and Untimed modes of play. This time, a new interface greets the player wherein the word list appears on top of the screen, with the rest of the bottom dedicated into solving word puzzles. Furthermore, you will now have to contend with up to eight jumbled letters. I know it’s quite daunting as it sounds, but due to the randomness of the words in each level, you’ll really never going to predict what word length comes next.

Besides, you now have a skip button too, which you can press up to two times in each game instance. I hate to use it though, but for you guys who aim for top scores, it really becomes a valuable resource for Text Twist 2.

A real surprise to this installment is the additional game modes you can play if you’re already getting tired with the classic text-twisting. Now, you can play Word of the Day if you just need a quick two minute gaming fix before you’re off to your daily tasks, play Lightning mode for a more action-packed gameplay, or even play Crossword, which is in my opinion, the greatest twist in Text Twist 2. Pun intended, but I guess you all know what I mean.

Anyway, in Lightning mode, your objective is to form the most Bingo Words you can muster within the time limit. Forming words will add more time to the game clock and if you’re struggling, letter hints will be given to aid your efforts. Crossword mode plays just as the name suggests – it’s a crossword puzzle where you form words out of the letters of a single long word. In this mode, there’s an underlying strategy to form the Bingo Word first, but is still pretty challenging depending on the crossword form.

Text Twist 2 greatly improved in graphics and sounds, and I just loved playing the original gameplay as well as having good long rounds against the new modes of play. The addictive nature of the game is still there and its infinite appeal is definitely put into mind, being injected also on the new game modes. Also, the trophy system adds a great deal of motivation to the player, ensuring that you’ll play this game for very long hours without much means to stop.

Wheel of Fortune 2

After the release of JEOPARDY! 2, Sony Online Entertainment gives us another TV show-based sequel with the Wheel of Fortune 2 game. And since Wheel of Fortune is another one of those TV shows that claim to be America’s #1 game show, it can get disappointing too if its casual game counterpart doesn’t live up to the show’s expectations. But that’s what we’re here to find out anyway, so I guess let’s just get to the review, pronto! :-)

As all of you might have guessed, Wheel of Fortune 2 follows the game play mechanics and objectives as we all have watched countless times on the original TV game show. Each round of play requires you to solve a particular phrase ala-hangman, with points awarded depending on what amount you land on “The Wheel”. Just beat your competition after several rounds by landing in the most points while, of course, trying to avoid the wheel’s bankrupt penalty, and you’ve already got yourself a Wheel of Fortune champion. Simple and clean, right?

Just like JEOPARDY! 2, the Wheel of Fortune 2 game enables you also to design your avatar depending on your own visual preferences. This game also features 4 game modes for you to choose from, including Quick Play, Road Trip, Play Alone and the multiplayer option, Group Play. And if that’s not enough wheel-spinning madness, there’s also the Puzzle of the Day which basically plays just like Quick Play but for some reason, it’s separated from the other game modes. I’m guessing that there’s something special here that eluded me, but I guess I’ll let it off for now.

The Review

After playing Road Trip for quite some time (the game feature where you get to travel on different parts of the USA), I honestly found the Wheel of Fortune 2 game more enjoyable than that of SOE’s JEOPARDY! 2. While the graphics are pretty much the same awesome 3D animation, the game play can get quite addicting and I’m guessing that review holds true only because in my opinion, Wheel of Fortune is really loads better than Jeopardy. And I would like to commend SOE for doing well in capturing the game’s overall enjoyability.

One thing I noticed though is that this game also lacks any music just like JEOPARDY! 2. While the sound effects are really nice, I honestly think that any casual game is incomplete if it doesn’t have any background music. Besides, the game can get real boring too when you’re just waiting for your opponent to finish on his/her turn, and from my experience, music always tends to be the savior when these kinds of things happen.

I’m also impressed by the AI since they can also make mistakes just like you and I liked the trophy system that rewards you when you achieve certain milestones in the game. All in all, the Wheel of Fortune 2 game is really much better than JEOPARDY! 2, but still, it has its major flaws with the absence of music. I only wish that a possible sequel should be more creative, but for now, I guess this sequel is still worth your free 1 hour try.

Letter Lab

The Letter Lab game fills in the void left by the lack of released Word game titles this month and it’s been a while too since we reviewed a Word game here at Casualicious dot Com. So, without further ado, I present to you guys Letter Lab, the recent spelling game developed by the good folks at Freeze Tag.

The story of Letter Lab revolves around Lilly, a chemist that had just developed the world’s first ever Spelling Intelligence Serum. Now, I don’t really know what breakthrough uses this serum could actually do, but since the world is just filled with bad guys these days, any unique experiment also usually attracts its own fiendish robber. And with this cue, enters Dr. Al Literate, an old man with a passion for participating on a spelling bee contest.

Seriously, the story is just outrageous so I’ll just stop there. One thing you need to know though is that Lilly and Dr. Al got into a little spelling fight for the rights to the serum. And that’s how we got the game Letter Lab in existence today. :-)

As many other Word games, Letter Lab’s objective is for you to spell as many words and gain as many points as you can before your opponent fills his own meter. Being straightforward and easy, you just have to keep in mind that on a 3×3 grid filled with random letters, every word you form should always contain the middle letter. This provides quite a challenge, but still, I have my own trick up my sleeve too. ;-)

The Review

One thing obvious about the Letter Lab game is that it has a very funny storyline presented on a comic book style typical of most casual games. The keyboard typing of words works very nice too, but the best thing about the game, in my opinion, would have to be the music. Well, I can’t really dig much deeper than that, so let’s just say that I liked the game’s funky sounds blending well to the frantic game play in Arcade mode.

On the negative side though, Letter Lab is a very short game with regards to its gaming idea. Composed of only playing 15 rounds against the old Dr. Al, the game left me feeling that I just wasted 15 minutes of my life in Easy mode. Well, I did try Hard mode too, but I gradually lost interest after a few rounds of the same old spelling routine, leaving me hungry for some gaming dynamics.

Besides, you can always restart a challenge when you think that you can’t already beat the time by pressing the ESC key. This brings you to the same challenge but with a different set of letters, so the whole game difficulty really depends mostly on luck when you think about it.

Look, I liked the game concept but Letter Lab just lacks depth, that’s all. I guess it’s more targeted for kids because it’s short and easy but kids can grow bored too playing the same game all the time. But I guess it’s still worth a try though, since you can finish the whole game already with the 1 hour trial anyway. :-P

Hello once again to another Casual Gaming Weekday, where yours truly will link to the casual games that happened to be released this previous week.
