Mahjong will always be same old mahjong they say, and nothing can change that, but in Safari Island Deluxe, we get to see a new face in the same addictive mahjong gameplay. And yes, based from the name itself, this game features tons of wild animals and other safari-based stuff. But there’s more to tackle in this game besides the theme, and that’s what I aim to show you in this review.

Like what I had said earlier, Safari Island Deluxe actually plays like mahjong, but there’s an outstanding twist to the gameplay. Instead of matching two tiles of the same design, you have to match tiles that combine to form a picture. For example, two tiles will separately illustrate the head and tail of a snake. You have to combine both tiles to eliminate them from the game. Eliminate all tiles and you get to move on to the next level.

Your aim is to reach the end of the island while unlocking animal clouds along the way. Each level you finish will be ranked according to how well you did on that particular game. Removing all tiles will only rank you a bronze check mark, removing all tiles within the time limit is worth a silver check mark, and beating the target score set in each level will earn a whopping gold check mark. Now, while all of that sounds good, one complaint I have on this ranking system is how impossible it is to earn a gold mark on many of the levels. The target score is just too big and you have to be god-like fast in order to attain it.

The unique gameplay of Safari Island Deluxe opens up a great deal of innovation in terms of challenge. Many of the items and animals illustrated on later levels are just too big to contain in only two tiles. This means that you’ll have to contend with combining up to 5 tiles for just one picture, and if you’re a seasoned mahjong player, you know that unlocking tile parts can really be such a pain.

Other usual mahjong obstacles show themselves in the game too. Examples include locked tiles needing their corresponding keys to open, and tiles with overgrown vines which you have to free by eliminating all its adjacent tiles. And if you’re trying to earn silver check marks, this can really be a challenging game to beat.

Compensating these obstacles are power-ups scattered all around the game. Safari Island Deluxe will only introduce a power-up as you progress, but it seems that the timing is perfect as well while you use them during when they are already available. Power-ups include the time amulet which adds more juice to your time limit, the sun totem which shows you partner tiles of the tile you’re currently selecting, and many other useful ones helping you reach the elusive silver check mark.

The fun doesn’t stop there since you can also play timed hidden object mini-games during the bonus areas and learn many useful trivia about the many animals too. There’s nothing to brag about here though, because all the unique mahjong gameplay already got me rooting for this game. There are no special effects or eye-popping graphics, just plain, fun tile-combining, and the bottom line is that you just have to give this game a try.

Mythic Mahjong

Just when you thought that you’ve already seen it all in terms of Mahjong games, the Mythic Mahjong game coming from Oberon Media and Big Mojo Games surfaced out of the woodwork to prove all of us wrong. Incorporating traditional Mahjong gaming rules and blending it with a very nice storyline, this game just plain rocks! And I’m gonna tell you all about it in this review.

In Mythic Mahjong, you take the role of a wizard’s apprentice as you travel towards “The Frozen North” in search of the evil Jeweled Dragon who just ransacked the Faerie Queen’s magic jewels. With the dragon leaving a jewel trail during his escape, it is now your task to recover the Faerie Realm’s treasured life force and try to bring back health to your ailing queen. But every adventure has its share of roadblocks too, and on this game, you also get to battle it out against the dragon’s minions and fulfill several quests while you travel along the straightforward Mahjong gaming path.

Well, yes, Mythic Mahjong is really straightforward as all Mahjong games go, where your task is to just match up same patterned tiles until you clear the jewels on the board. But what sets this game apart is a battle-mode feature available after every set of levels wherein you get to conjure spells by matching up specially marked tiles. This feature surprised me very much in a good way, and I guess that explains why Mythic Mahjong is now one of the top 5 Mahjong games in Big Fish today.

The Review

I guess you guys are already thinking that I’m gonna be too biased in this review since the start. But I can’t really help it because I did have much fun playing the Mythic Mahjong game. I guess it all started from the very engaging storyline presented well during the prologue of the game. And went really great after a series of confrontations on some of the other NPC characters, thus, adding more juice to the plot.

The graphics are good too and the background has this magical feel to it. And coupled with relaxing music, the game is just plain soothing to play. I guess that the only flaw of Mythic Mahjong is its lack of challenge. I don’t know if I’m just too good or what, but I really feel that there’s just too much time allotted for each level. Heck, I didn’t even notice that a timer existed until later on, so I guess that explains why I’m so happy about my progress, eh? :-D

Anyway, Mythic Mahjong is really one cool Mahjong game and it won’t disappoint you guys even if you just try it for an hour. Besides, who heard of boss battles in Mahjong games before this one? Yes, I guess that question got you stumped too, right? :-)

Snow Queen Mahjong

It’s already summer but we’re still not getting off the ice as we get to review today the Snow Queen Mahjong game from Media Art, Inc. And in case you’re wondering why we’re getting so much ice-based games during times of searing heat (in my location, anyway), well, I guess it’s all the effect of the sun messing through the developers’ brains. Or maybe because these games are submitted towards the end of winter and was put on temporary hold. Well, either reason is fine, really. What matters most is that we get to play games, right? :-)

Anyway, let’s get to the game.

The Snow Queen Mahjong game tells the story of Gretta, as she travels far and wide to rescue her kidnapped brother, Karl from the clutches of the Snow Queen. On the way, she gets to meet magical animals, royalty and other people as they help her achieve her quest and from other misfortunes that befall her. Well yes, it’s another one of those cheesy fairy tales, but I guess you can’t get more creative with magical ice anyways.

Just like any other Mahjong game, the mechanics of the Snow Queen Mahjong game is for you to match same-patterned tiles to melt them off of the game board before the allotted time runs out. In this game, there are also season and flower tiles that you can match regardless of the engraved design. And one feature I haven’t seen on other Mahjong games is the “chained” tiles wherein you’ll just have to match the chain ends to melt a whole row of tiles.

There are also quite a number of bonuses you can use to speed up your tile-matching progress. However, these bonuses are limited and you can purchase more of them only when you trade a set amount of points for each. Not really good if you’re aiming for a high score, but a fair exchange nonetheless if you just want to finish the game.

The Review

One thing I liked best about the Snow Queen Mahjong game is the story behind Gretta’s adventure. Yes, I did say that it’s cheesy, but it’s very appealing too and I bet the kids will love the fantasy behind it also. The game has this beautiful artwork acting as wallpaper behind the mahjong tiles and the music matches well with the game play. All in all, you just gotta love the game’s overall appearance and presentation.

In terms of challenge, you might think that it’s just the same as most Mahjong games. But in reality, the Snow Queen Mahjong game presents a twist to straightforward mahjong when the Snow Queen appears randomly during play to add more tiles on your board. It’s quite annoying actually, but oftentimes I find it helpful when the added tiles match some of my stuck tiles too.

Another bonus is the way that you can choose your own tile patterns before you start any point in the story. By default, it’s the same old Chinese mahjong tiles, so I didn’t really bothered changing how the tiles looked in my game because I’m already used to this one. It’s easy to miss though, just look at the bottom side of your screen when you’re at the map view and you’ll get to change it also for your own preference. ;-)

The Snow Queen Mahjong game can get really repetitive but you can’t expect anything more from mahjong games anyway. It’s unique in its own way and has a good story. And I guess it’s time for you to check it out on your own. :-P

Mahjong Burger Game Review

It’s been quite a while since we last reviewed a mahjong game and because of that, our mahjong category has been getting rusty without new games added to its roster. Therefore, it’s really a pleasure that we get to review today the Mahjong Burger game coming from gamesgames.com. And since I’m getting really excited to be playing another tile-matcher for a change, let’s get to the review then, shall we?

In case you’ve forgotten already, the objective of the Mahjong Burger game (and of any other mahjong game for that matter) is for you to eliminate mahjong tiles from the playfield by matching them up with a tile of the same pattern and design. And unlike most mahjong games that mostly incorporate themes coming from lost civilizations, in this game, you get to run a fast food joint which, I guess, is a first for games of this type.

Really now, I’ve seen fast food themes used in most time management games, but I never though that it can be used for mahjong also. Kudos to the developer for such creativity. And considering that there’s this time management feel to it (you’ll know it when you play), I can say that this is really some frantic mahjong game compared to the rest.

The Review

Playing the Mahjong Burger game made me reminisce about the last time I played games of this type, and from what I can remember, I had so much fun whenever I get to clean up those silly little tiles. But what I really liked about this game is the girl’s funny little actions during play which makes it very entertaining other than the typical mahjong action you’d expect. The challenge is also set within 3 levels, so you’ll have a chance to set your skill level too and “hard” is really quite hard in my point of view. :-)

What’s bad about this game though is that some of the burger variations are kinda indistinguishable at first glance. There are also these miscellaneous tile patterns too like the doll and the car, which I think are unnecessary considering the overall theme of the game. But all in all, if you don’t mind these things too much, I guess you’ll like the game too. :-)

Anyway, it’s now time for you to decide.

Mahjongg: Ancient Mayas Game Review

Mahjong game fans have a reason to celebrate before New Year with the most recent installment Mahjongg: Ancient Mayas game just released last December 27.

And what I can tell you is that this game is just a classic mahjong game set in the ancient Maya civilization. But that doesn’t mean though that you won’t be having fun. In fact, this is what classic mahjong fun is all about and well, you just hafta read on to check my opinions.

Tiles and Ruins Go Together

Basically, with mahjong games, the criteria that you’ll be looking for most would be the setting since most of the gameplay elements between other mahjong games are quite the same anyways.

In this case, the setting took place on the ancient empire of the Mayas and the game’s adventure mode opens up with a story in which you get to visit the civilization ruins in order for you to find out more about the Mayan race.

Good and Bad Points

Well, all I can say is that the Mahjongg: Ancient Mayas game blends good background music with detailed graphics and this fusion effectively brings you to have a nice gaming experience. I never really explored much on the game aside from the adventure mode but you can just look at it this way: if I had this much fun on a single game mode, then you can bet that the rest of the game modes will be there to add more luster to the classic mahjong game.

I did have some problems on some of the tile structures where specific tiles are hidden from view (and you won’t have any idea how to match them up aside from getting hints). If this is some glitch or an intentional challenge still eludes me at this point though.

All in all, mahjong match-’em-up lovers should really check out the Mahjongg: Ancient Mayas game. I’m not a mahjong fan but as soon as I started playing, I find that it’s really easy to get engaged in the game. And if you’re like me, I guess you’ll be loving it too. =)
