Zatikon DownloadChronic Logic released Zatikon by mid-April and it took me two weeks to get around and look at it for a review of its own. Frankly, I was hesitant to check on it after finding out it’s a multiplayer online game of sorts (due to my history of getting too addicted on MMORPG’s), but since it’s a free game anyway, I guess it’s worth telling you guys all about it, and what to expect before you download one for your own.

Zatikon is such a weird but unique name for a game and currently, I can’t find a reason for the game to be named as such. All I know is that the game settings focus on medieval times, where units like knights, bowmen and pike men are your primary characters. There’s no storyline involved in the game too, and after starting it up and registering your account, off you go on your first campaign against a computer opponent or against the available players on chat.

Starting up a mission, you are first greeted by a chessboard-like interface of eleven-by-eleven cells. On a one against one match, you have your castle firmly attached at the middle bottom of the board. I had no chance to go against other players for a two-against-two party, so I can’t comment much on where your castle will be if you have four players on the screen. But I guess the same mechanics still apply if you happen to find other players to go play with, so if by chance there’s just a few players online, I suggest tell your friends to download so you can all go and have some crack at the game.

Moving on, the main objective of each match in Zatikon is for you to invade your enemy’s castle by moving a friendly unit on its location. The first step in each map is the deployment, wherein you’ll be able to release units available on your inventory into the field for combat. It’s up to you to decide on how many you’ll need to deploy. Just make sure they’ll survive the whole encounter since unit availability in this game is of most importance.

Zatikon DownloadUnits have their own strengths, weaknesses and special abilities. Obviously, magic and bow users have longer range, and units on mounts can travel longer distances on the board. You can review each of their features by clicking on the unit and reading the display at the right side of the screen. And initiate unit movement and attack depending on the available actions you have for each of your turns.

Zatikon is turn-based, meaning that you can’t do anything else when your opponent is on active mode and playing his units. Good thing that each turn is timed and you can use the available time to plan your next moves. Of course, when you’re all set, you can always end your turn even though there is remaining time left on the clock.

Zatikon features neither amazing graphics nor sounds that can put you in awe. There are some basic animation in the game like knights losing their horses and wolves transforming as werewolves, but don’t expect much eye candy since you’ll probably just be disappointed with the current state of the game.

What the game offers though is a unique and addictive gameplay. It’s simple, yes, but that simplicity is what makes the game shine like that new plug-and-play device you bought for your computer. And since it is an online multiplayer game, you can make sure that you’ll experience something new every single time you play as you go against opponents you haven’t faced before.

Zatikon is also free to download and play, and leveling up and earning gold means you can acquire more units just like any other player in the arena. However, if you find yourself wanting to unlock other characters, you can always purchase expansion packs for a chance to gain advantage against the computer or other human players.

All in all, it’s definitely worth your try whenever you have time for some simple online gaming fun. What’s more, you can tell your friends about it, grow the community, and gain other friends as you interact with them at the chat function of the game.

Heartwild Solitaire

Solitaire games are mostly considered as the same card matching gameplay played on many casual game titles past, but in terms of how the game is presented, each goes to tell a different story. Heartwild Solitaire proves that solitaire is one game that can definitely look very good with stunning graphics, sounds and an engaging storyline. And even minus the innovation, still proves to be very addictive.

The game opens up with a one of a kind love story about a woman named Anna and her quest to find happiness and true love. The narration is poetic as it speaks of an unfolding drama while she goes through her little quest. And while I admit that it’s kind of a cheesy backdrop to a supposedly fast-paced casual game, reading the story still gives a sense of purpose to the whole game mechanics, not that it explains why you’ll be matching cards though. Anyway, it felt like reading a book, and those who love reading romance novels will find the game’s storyline up to par.

The objective of Heartwild Solitaire is simple. You have to match same numbered cards to clear the pairs off the board and do this until you empty the board of all cards. Cards that are not overlapped by another card will turn face-up, meaning that it’s ready for a pair. And if no pairs are available at the board, turn to the stock pile and try finding a card that you can use for pairing.

The game rewards you both by playing fast and playing smart. Points are awarded whenever you fill up the bonus meter on various levels corresponding to a point multiplier, and more points will be given if you match card pairs in an ascending or descending sequence depending on the number magnitude. In later levels still, playing wise is the way to go. Else, you’ll many times find yourself without any more cards to match, forcing you to use shuffle power-ups or restarting the level until you beat it.

Heartwild Solitaire also includes bonus levels in the middle and end of each stage. Mid-stage, you’ll come across a time trial bonus level where your task is to find random asked cards within the range of a countdown timer. At the end of each stage, you’ll be contending with another typical solitaire board, but this time, there will be no available stock pile for you to draw cards from.

Heartwild Solitaire is not unique, but what it really boasts of is its amazing graphics and sounds. The game is beautiful and with that, I mean including the game boards, the relaxing music and even the storyline narration. There is so much time spent in making this game as amazing as can be, and with the addictive gameplay of classic solitaire, I appreciate it very much and I highly recommend playing the game for your own trial run.

Poker for Dummies

The casual gaming division of Electronic Arts released Poker for Dummies not just for fun and entertainment, but for educational purposes as well. Well, that’s what I think anyway, because in this game, you don’t just go and have fun with poker, but learn quite a lot about it also.

Putting it in shorter terms, Poker for Dummies is probably more of an electronic encyclopedia about poker, its history, culture, terms, rules and of course, how to play it more effectively. In fact, greeting you just after you start the game is already the vast knowledge about how to play poker, and when you already learned its many twists and turns, you can also immediately test yourself through the quizzes accompanying the lessons.

Of course, lectures can only teach you so much, because the more important thing is the hands-on training. Through the practice interface, you can play against computer players while being assisted by your poker coach on what to do during the whole activity. Owing more to the chance calculator, you’re either advised to call, bet or even fold, making the coach more mathematical in approach rather than basing on instincts.

There are 3 kinds of poker modes you can play in this game too. The available modes are the famous Texas Hold ‘Em, Omaha and 7-Card Stud. Learning how to play these types are also included as a tutorial. And if you really want some full-blown exercise, you can immediately bet your way into the game’s actual play mode – where you’re given a limited amount of money against computer players and try to earn yourself more by beating them on poker games.

All in all, Poker for Dummies is really one great time-waster especially if you love playing poker. The game is very educational too, and you’ll pretty much pick up valuable tips on how you can improve your game. The game is just simplistic in nature though because of the basic poker table interface, and it’s not that entertaining as well if you’re not counting the addictive poker gameplay.
