If there’s one most important criteria for any arcade game to get viral, then I guess it’s explosions, explosions and more explosions! And in the Swarm Gold game, you get much of those things as we get to review today this space shooter from Reflexive Entertainment.

In this game, you play as a space miner off to gather precious EZT minerals scattered throughout space. EZT is the future’s best non-renewable fuel, explaining why there’s an on-going war between Humans and Clagnors over this resource. Nothing to worry about though, because you’re designed with a ship made especially to deal with these aliens, blasting them into dust and in the end, hope to gain monopoly over the precious EZT sources.

Your task in the game is simple enough, just follow each mission’s objectives and try to leave the scene in one piece by passing through the exit warp gate. Most of the time, you’re tasked to gather EZT’s while racing against your alien enemies, but for time to time, you’re also given extermination missions where you’ll need to vaporize all aliens in sight.

The controls of the game are very smooth and use both the mouse and keyboard during play. Use the keyboard’s spacebar for thrust, and the mouse functions to aim, shoot and plant mines in space. Indicators will show you where the enemies and EZT’s are, so all you really have to do is to follow their specific directions depending on your current mission.

As I had said before, one thing I really liked about Swarm Gold is the explosive special effects of the game. Coupled with amazing sound effects, I just loved laying waste to alien ships and planting mines against space rocks to gain myself some power-ups along the way too. However, the overall control of the game needs much getting used to and the static space background feels bland in my point of view. But if you can get through all that negative stuff, then I guess this game can keep you company for hours of shooting fun.

Astro Avenger 2

Following up from where Astro Avenger left off, scattering scrap heaps of alien ship remains everywhere, the Astro Avenger 2 game had just been released from Sahmon Games with more firepower and greater arcade action in comparison with its predecessor.

In this Shooter game, you take on the role of a sole human spacecraft as you fly towards alien base stations, laying waste to everything on your path. Actually, that’s all there is to it for this game since Astro Avenger 2 is just as straightforward as most Shooter games following the same storyline. However, the game makes up for it by incorporating awesome graphics and unparalleled explosive goodness. And honestly, that’s more than enough to make me go addicted to a simple casual game. :-P

In fact, just check out the nice cinematic introduction to Astro Avenger 2 (located at the bottom of this post) and you’ll already have an idea on what I’m talking about.

Anyways, the whole objective of Astro Avenger 2 is for you to reach the final battle with the mother ship of the enemy alien civilization. Yes, it’s cliché, I know, but before you get to blast some gigantic alien flying thingy, you get to upgrade all your wares too. And believe me, this is where this game really comes to shine as you get to play with 25 types of lasers, 5 kinds of rockets, 4 kinds of droids, various ship upgrades, and one bad ass secret weapon that… well… I guess I’ll keep that one as a secret too. :-P

The Review

The Astro Avenger 2 game really has mighty fine graphics backing up that very smooth game play typical of great Shooter games. The controls are very nice and I liked the fact that you can customize it all to your preferences. Whether you’re comfortable using a mouse, a keyboard or a joystick, the game just runs perfectly and beautifully too, especially in full-screen mode.

And as I said before, all of the ship upgrades and weapons are very nice and I had so much fun switching through the lasers during the actual game action. The music and sounds are top notch too, but still tends to get repetitive over-time if you’re the type that minds your game music very much. The challenge can get really difficult also on later levels, but nothing a simple war freak crazy blasting can solve, right? :-D

All in all, Astro Avenger 2 is definitely one fun game and can get so much addictive even just after you plug in to play. Besides, I just missed some if those explosions in arcade games and this game really satisfied me very well.

Download the Astro Avenger 2 game here.

Also, here’s the startup cinematic I promised you guys earlier. Enjoy!

BoomsticK

Alright you primitive screwheads, listen up. This is my BOOMSTICK!!!

Heard that phrase from somewhere before? Well, I guess that’s where our game review for today got its name. Other than the possibility that after that particular phrase was coined on the film, “Army of Darkness”, shotguns became well known as boomsticks too. But you’ll soon recall that on the video below this post, for now, let’s talk about the game. :-)

The BoomsticK game, coming from Abduction Studios Inc., is a point-and-shoot mayhem of a game where you take control of a stickman and his powerful trusty shotgun as you destroy various flying shapes of different sizes and colors. Composed of 21 tiers of shape invasions, make your way across all the particles hell-bent on destroying you while picking up ammo and power-ups along the way. The shape boss awaits you at the end, survive enough of the onslaught, and face his wrath with BoomsticK at your side.

The Review

The BoomsticK game actually reminds me very much of the same shape-shooting action found in RetroSplode. Unlike the retro game though, the side view action of BoomsticK is much more challenging and more exhilarating. Considering that you can’t jump too, because well, jumping is for sissies anyways. :-P

The graphics and sounds are just so nice that I can play this game forever if it doesn’t have that ending (and if I stop dying every time I get to the last stage, lol). The game play is very smooth too, aside from the occasional lag I experience when too much particles are raining down on the interface. That’s why the flash settings are my friends, thus, I can diminish the quality anytime. ;-)

And because we’re lacking some good Shooter games recently, it’s really nice that the BoomsticK game surfaced and filled up that void.

Play the BoomsticK game here.

P.S. I promised a video, so here it is! Check out the origins of the BoomsticK (I think).

R.O.B.O.T. Relatively Obedient Being of Thought Game Review

Whew, that was long! Anyway, ever thought your first flash game to be this good? :-)

The R.O.B.O.T. game coming from Marauder Interactive is exactly just that as the author claims this game as his first flash game release. Now, I really don’t know any great thing about flash programming, but if I manage to make a game within this caliber getting such good feedback, then I’ll be on my way into making a sequel, no?

Anyway, in the R.O.B.O.T. game, you take control of the last KX-3700 army class robot in existence as you try to survive against other robots sent to terminate you. Aim, shoot and destroy the never-ending waves of robots coming at you as you dodge missiles and bullets deployed in your direction. Upgrade your wares too by modifying 8 parts of your robot body, and well, just wash, rinse and repeat until you lay waste to all your opponents.

The Review

The R.O.B.O.T. game is actually one of the entries for JayIsGames Game Design Competition 5, so please vote for the game here if you like it. Anyway, I’ll just post in this blog what I think.

R.O.B.O.T. is actually fun and I loved playing it very much; however, the game also comes its own limitations. The thing is that I really did not see much interaction with the game’s background since I got the feeling that the background is just there for show. Bullets, enemies and even your robot can pass through the wall even though at first glance, the wall gives you an illusion of being an obstacle. This confuses me very much maybe because I’m just used to walls being obstacles, but some of you may think so too, right?

However, the gameplay really is smooth enough and I definitely liked the R.O.B.O.T. game’s graphics and sounds. The best things in the game though are the upgrades and during the later modifications, you can already visibly see the effects on your robot. The challenge can be really engaging too and the game gets really hard during the later levels. Of course, you can choose your difficulty before you start, but the increasing challenge is always there whichever you choose.

Aside from that, a change in scenery and an ending would be nice. But enough of my own ramblings, it’s now time for you to try it too. :-)

Boxhead: The Zombie Wars Game Review

Even before the Died Hard game that we reviewed a while back, the idea of “one man against many zombies” had already been a very famous theme on many games including those released on consoles. But when it comes to flash online gaming, one name exceptionally comes to mind, and that one name would be Boxhead.

Yes, it’s another one of those Boxhead games as we get to review today Sean Cooper’s 5th installment to the series, entitled as the Boxhead: The Zombie Wars game. And in case you’re curious, it’s still the same old bloody encounter, but even so, expect to experience more gore with this 5th game with additional features involving more zombie carnage you’ll surely love.

For the uninitiated, the objective of the Boxhead games is for you to survive waves upon waves of zombie and demon box-people attacks by simply blowing up their heads using a myriad of explosive firepower. But what’s really new about this installment is that there’s an added game mode wherein you’ll be fending off the same zombie attacks within a base complete with turrets and other defenses. Your main concern in this new mode is to keep your base operational at all times, and just keep blowing zombie heads up like you used to do on classic mode. Easy enough, no?

The Review

The Boxhead: The Zombie Wars game obviously tweaked the graphics up a little bit on this one and I really loved the challenge presented by the new enemies popping randomly out of the ground. I think I’m getting pretty rusty too during the time I played this game since I really had a hard time coping up with the zombie waves. Oh well, I guess it’s been a long time since the last Boxhead game, so maybe it’s already high time to practice again killing those nasty zombies.

Anyway, another great thing about Zombie Wars is the “base construction” feature. In the classic mode, I find it quite challenging to construct a base from scratch since the zombies are already attacking the barricades even just during installment. However, in the defense mode, everything’s already up and dandy, and the mayhem amazingly starts during the appearance of the very first zombie. Unfortunately though, there’s no cooperative play on this 5th game, but in my opinion, all’s fun still since I can’t play with anyone right now anyways. :-P

For me, this is what action games should really look like and play like, and you guys should definitely try your own against this game. It’s one of the best Boxhead games so far and before we await another greater sequel, I really recommend you guys play this game and well, try not to drench in too much zombie blood in the process.
