Cake Mania 3
Action & Arcade Games, Time Management Games September 19th, 2008
Sandlot Games continues to exploit the time management genre as they released the Cake Mania 3 game, the 3rd in a series of cake-making games that feature the story of Jill and her wild bunch of friends. And this time around, you get to travel back in time too. How’s that possible, you say? Well, I guess we just have to get started with the review.
In this game, Jill is finally getting married to Jack, and of course, coming with that are all the frustrations and hectic planning experienced by expecting couples. With her are various friends and relatives helping her prepare for the wedding day, but then, disaster strikes.
Jill accidentally broke a mysterious Time Bender globe and when everybody tried to pick up the broken pieces, all of them got catapulted back in time into several different eras. And since you’re such a great cake-making hero that you are, it’s up to you and Jill to bring back her lost friends and get back in time for the wedding to materialize.
Now, in terms of game mechanics, Cake Mania 3 follows the standard time management flow where you have to serve customers cake and various other services while keeping them satisfied and patient. Give them the menu, wait for their orders, bake and put flavoring on the cakes, and serve and profit. Look out for customer combinations too, as they order more stuff and will only provide you little time to serve them. And just like the previous installments, there’s still much waiting involved when preparing the food, just ample time to do other chores while the cakes take time to get ready.
While doing these things will certainly become hectic as you go along the many levels of this game, there’re optional mini-games you can play too to take your mind off of the actual challenges. For example, there’s the conveyor belt mini-game where you’re tasked to meet a quota of cakes containing 3 stacks and have them packaged and delivered. You may earn bonus money from these mini-games as well as additional power-ups too that you can take to the next level, if you’re lucky enough to achieve them.
Cake Mania 3 also enables you to buy equipment and upgrades to help you serve customers faster and more efficient. Profits from your adventures go into buying these stuff and you get to earn more profits too by offering other services aside from the usual cake. In fact, you can even change Jill’s outfit within this interface, but if you’re going to ask me, I definitely loved the themed costumes Jill wear whenever she’s traveling through the different time frames.
With all of these positive features, the real shine of this game comes from the vast array of zany customers. For each time stage, you’re greeted with a funny cut scene involving some really weird characters (like the talking dinosaur in the prehistoric age). The customers change after each stage too, and you’ll find yourself serving ballerina triceratops and purple monkeys because well, the game crazily lets you do just that.
All in all, the overall presentation of Cake Mania 3 is great and its theme very much spells fun. However, certain limitations come with the area by which Jill walks when sometimes, she goes around the counters when preparing cakes, losing you much time and planning effort in the process. Anyway, there are still a couple of ways you can get around this problem, so I guess it’s not much of an annoyance. The important thing is that you have fun playing, and the game effectively does just that.
