Anne’s Dream World
Match 3 Games, Puzzle Games January 5th, 2009
In Anne’s little village by the countryside, children don’t play with electronic gadgets and just rely on good old fashioned imagination to have some fun. Anne’s Dream World is actually the product of this child’s wonderful mind as we get to play a match 3 installment revolving around a fantasy involving monster jellies and talking frogs.
Anne once lived in a small village where she can live all her fantasies freely and without bounds. However, one day due to some circumstances regarding her dad’s work, her family had to move to the city and settle there against her will. Being in the city didn’t stop her imagination though, because as soon as she got bored, she dreams herself back into her old village, where an adventure awaits her, battling evil jellies trying to destroy her much-loved town.
Anne’s Dream World, as the name suggests, takes place in Anne’s dream sequence where your main objective is to get rid of all the bad jellies destroying the village. The mechanics of the game involves lining up three or more same colored jellies, but not really same old match 3 as you might think. This time, jellies won’t detach immediately after being matched; instead, you have to wait for a constantly scanning laser beam to touch an exposed part of the match, so that all attached jellies (and other jellies below them) will fall down the floor of the game board.
All fallen jellies will then be collected to charge up power-up globes that will aid you in solving the puzzles. A power-up will only charge though if a certain jelly color matches the bonus that you’ll want to trigger. Power-ups include rockets, lightning and fireballs and can be upgraded too before you start each level. However, one thing disappointing about power-ups is that they can’t be controlled on where you want them to go, and will automatically fire after successfully completing the power-up bars.
In my opinion, the greatest highlight of Anne’s Dream World is its challenge. As the levels progress, you’ll find yourself contending against road blocks and several other obstacles that needs clearing up. The game gets faster too and on later stages, you’ll also encounter advance jelly types that have additional rules before you can use them. This is aside from getting through the boss battles before each level ends, and bosses can get really annoying on later stages too.
If you don’t mind repeating levels for a couple of times, Anne’s Dream World can be quite fun too. The storyline is engaging and the sounds are just fantastic. However, I cannot say the same about the controls since dragging jellies around can be a bit of a pain.
There’s a jelly shooting mini-game too and a trophy system for several of the game’s achievements. There are also free play game modes that you can unlock. But if you’ll ask me, you won’t be able to experience free play or even acquire a single trophy unless you go beyond the game trial, so don’t expect much if you’re just trying it out.
