Alchemist’s Apprentice
Match 3 Games, Puzzle Games April 12th, 2009
Alchemy is a long lost art which has roots on both science and magic. The Alchemist’s Apprentice game tackles this lost art as you get to play as a high school alchemy student in a match 3 puzzle game set in a magical world. But as a game, how does it differ with its genre counterparts? Well, that’s what we are about to find out in this review.
The story of the game opens up with the protagonist trying to learn alchemical crafts in his room. After getting some news from his uncle, a renowned alchemist who governs a whole magical province, the boy sets out to meet him. However, what he found is a province left in shambles and no current trace of his uncle. He also found out that the whole province is entrusted to his care, which provides the objective of the game as you try to rebuild your uncle’s province and also try to recover him in the process.
Alchemist’s Apprentice plays as your normal match 3 game as you swap tiles in order to remove them from the board. Take note of coined tiles because each level has an objective which will have you collect a number of coins, which will eventually increase in quantity as you progress through levels. If a level has frozen panels, you’ll have to eliminate them too by swapping tiles over them. Complete all of the asked objectives before time expire and you progress to your next level.
Collecting coins goes into rebuilding your uncle’s province. Choose from a number of buildings to upgrade depending on your current coin reserve. Buildings can be upgraded up to three times and each time you upgrade, a new power-up feature is possible to be activated during the actual match 3 game. And when you reach the final upgrade for a building, you can have a chance to acquire an ally for more firepower.
Activating power-ups and allies is an automatic occurrence in the game. All you have to do is to collect their corresponding gems embedded on select tiles. After you get enough gems, watch as the power-ups do their thing: explosions and electric currents running throughout the whole board. All I can say is “wow!” as all the visual effects mesmerize me while I just concentrate on matching tiles. Of course, this is more prominent in later levels, since you’ll be able to collect all 5 allies if you plan your strategies right.
There are a total of three mini-game types in Alchemist’s Apprentice. The first is the leprechaun mini-game where you control a leprechaun while trying to collect coins falling from the money tree. Another is a hidden object type of mini-game activated after you complete all ten levels in each stage. And the last one is a reflex and memory type of game where you try to catch correct falling tiles – a mini-game activated when you’re trying to recruit allies to your cause.
Besides from the explosive power-up effects, Alchemist’s Apprentice is overall designed in a very good way. All the character and background designs are stunning and the mist effect and animations add to the mystique of the game theme. Although some of the tile colors are too bright for my taste, which made some of the colors hard to distinguish from one another (e.g. yellow-green and yellow).
The storyline is also not that in-depth for you to get too engaged, however, the gameplay is addictive enough to get you hooked. The mechanics are also not original, but since we’re talking about match 3 here, there’s really nothing much to improve other than the overall experience of the player, which this game does well in my opinion.
