Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express
Puzzle Games May 14th, 2008
It has been quite some time now since the Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express game was released from the Big Fish Games portal, so I guess blaming it all on the great length of this Puzzle game (as well as its file size), we only get to review it today at Casualicious dot Com. Nevertheless, the game proves to be as timeless as the novel it was based upon also, so I guess it’s really no big deal as I present you guys today our review of this game adaptation of a classic Agatha Christie novel published by The Adventure Company and developed by AWE Games.
In Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express, you play as Antoinette Marceau, a train company clerk burdened with the task of finding out the root cause behind the several mishaps surrounding the elegant Orient Express. An unfortunate delay in the form of an avalanche, the mysterious presence of a woman on a red kimono, and then, the death of one of the passengers, the plot just plain thickens after every clue you can find from those presently on board the train. And always there to back you up is detective Hercule Poirot, the original hero of this mystery, giving you further instructions and clues about the mystery, but unfortunately, was disabled with a sprain from a “sleeping” accident.
Anyways, for more info about the book and the original story, you guys can always search for it on Wikipedia. But before you do that, I must warn you that reading Wikipedia is a big spoiler in itself and not really advisable if you’re seriously going to play this game.
One best feature I found about the Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express game is its marvelous 3D graphics and cinematography. In fact, during the time I played this game, I almost turned off all of the visual effects just to make it run faster on my crappy computer, and that tells a lot about the quality of the game presentation. Unlike the Nancy Drew games though, Murder on the Orient Express has a 3rd person view that greatly exposes many of the game’s lush 3D surroundings. But still, the eerie factor is always there and many of the game puzzles are all set to give you a hard time also. Therefore, as a summary, the game is both challenging and beautiful, and I definitely liked it very much.
One thing bothering me though is how much Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express develops the storyline through too much cinematography. I’m betting that half of the game is all about developing the story, and as a result, making the game not as dynamic as it seemed to be. I guess that’s the greatest downside to book-based games, explaining why Murder on the Orient Express responded with a unique surprise ending of its own too. Call it a betrayal to the original story or what not, I still find the additional plot acceptable and very much fitting as a filler for this game.
